Gilbert Mesquite football coach Rich Iversen, the only coach in the school's nearly-decade history, resigned his coaching position Monday.
Gilbert district athletic director Mark Cisterna confirmed the resignation, saying he had been informed of the decision by Mesquite athletic director Anthony Scanio earlier in the day.
Iversen posted a 34-48 record in eight seasons with the Wildcats after serving many years as an assistant at Gilbert Highland. Mesquite qualified for the playoffs once in Iversen's tenure in the tough Fiesta Region (2002). Mesquite posted a 3-7 record this season.
Scanio said Iversen tendered his resignation Monday citing personal reasons.
"He's a man of few words," Scanio said. "He just thought it was time."
