For the first time, two Arizona players will take part in the McDonald’s All-American High School basketball games in the same year.
Phoenix St. Mary’s guard Jerryd Bayless and Mesa Red Mountain’s Kayla Pedersen were both selected to play in their respective games on March 28 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky.
Bayless, who has scored 2,724 career points at St. Mary’s, will play at the University of Arizona next year but not before he finishes his prep career. The Knights play in the 5A Division I quarterfinals tonight at Mesa Dobson. He is the first male from Arizona to play in the McDonald’s game since Richard Jefferson (Phoenix Moon Valley) in 1998.
Pedersen, who is bound for Stanford next year, is the third straight Arizona female player to make the McDonald’s game, following Christina Wirth (Chandler Seton Catholic) in 2005 and Dymond Simon (St. Mary’s) last year.
Nolan Church’s three home runs drove in five total runs to lead Gilbert (1-0) to a 10-0 win at home over Higley (0-2) in 4 1/2 innings. Starting pitcher Thomas Gutierrez also homered and drove in four runs while notching his first win on the young season for the Tigers. …
