Merrill Kelly shut down Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Kole Calhoun hit a three-run homer to pace Arizona State to a 6-2 victory Friday night in the Tempe Regional.

The Sun Devils (48-8) will play Hawaii in the winners' bracket Saturday, while Milwaukee (33-25) faces San Diego in an elimination game.

Kelly (10-2) worked eight innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits while walking three and striking out eight. Only three balls reached the outfield, and he had five 1-2-3 innings.

Kelly, a junior right-hander who already has been drafted twice, gave up an unearned run when the Sun Devils committed back-to-back errors in the first inning. But he settled down after that and retired the next 11 hitters, with four strikeouts.

Calhoun, who had been picked off base to end the Arizona State first inning, hit his 14th home run to right off Chad Pierce in the third for a 5-1 lead. That followed freshman Deven Marrero's two-run double in the second.

Arizona State tacked on a run in the seventh when Calhoun was hit by a pitch and scored on Riccio Torrez's double to left.

Milwaukee finished the scoring when Cole Kraft walked before Dan Buchholz drilled a 3-2, two-out pitch into the right-center gap in the eighth.

Kelly surrendered only Shaun Wegner's single to left in the first, Doug Dekoning's infield hit in the fifth and Buchholz's double.

The Panthers wound up nabbing four Arizona State runners on the bases; two on pickoffs, one in a rundown, and another trying to stretch a double into a triple.
