Turns out one of the East Valley’s best is staying put.
Tempe Marcos de Niza running back Harrison Evens has withdrawn a verbal commitment to San Diego State and will join Arizona State as a “preferred walk-on,” according to Padres coach Roy Lopez.
Evens finished with 2,100 total yards for a second consecutive season and scored 22 touchdowns this fall as the Padres reached the 5A Division II state semifinals. He’ll play at the ACA All-Star game on Saturday at Surprise Stadium.
Lopez said the 5-foot-11, 185-pounder will vie for playing time at flanker, as well as special teams. He could also redshirt.
“He’s on cloud nine right now,” Lopez said.
Evens gave a commitment to San Diego State last fall, but a key assistant left the program for Kansas, and Lopez said questions surfaced this spring about whether a scholarship was available.
Evens had a couple of meetings with ASU coach Dennis Erickson last month and gave his commitment. He’ll join Padres teammate Anthony Rose, a linebacker, on the Sun Devils.
“The last few days he’s talked with ASU coaches and it looks great,” Lopez said. “These are good kids who, in time, can play.”
