Tournament MVP Wendy Woudenberg scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds Saturday as the Scottsdale Christian girls basketball team beat Santa Fe Christian (Calif.) 52-33 in the championship of the Desert Classic tournament at Scottsdale Christian. Ashley Frank added 15 points for the Eagles (5-1).
PREP BASKETBALL
Michelle Amete scored 10 points, but it wasn't enough as Queen Creek lost, 41-30, to Tucson Flowing Wells in the third-place game at the Blue Ridge Tip-Off Tournament.
Nicole Childers scored a game-high 26 points and Kayla Pedersen had 22 as visiting Red Mountain (5-4) beat Yuma 63-45 in a 5A non-region game. . . . Christa Leesman scored 16 points and had 19 rebounds as Tempe Prep topped Sells Baboquivari, 40-34, to capture third place in the Phoenix Christian Girls Holiday Hoops Tournament.
Greg Bird scored 20 points as Red Mountain topped Yuma, 69-53 in a 5A boys basketball game. David Hall and Chris Geesling each added 12 points for the Mountain Lions (2-0).
WRESTLING
Arizona State finished fifth at the 2003 Cliff Keen/Las Vegas Invitational, with seven place winners, including runner-up Ryan Bader at 197-pounds. ASU had two fourth-place finishers in Patrick Williams (149) and Cain Velasquez (heavyweight). Nebraska ran away with the team title with 157.5 points to runner-up Michigan's 134.5.
SWIMMING
Arizona State's Agnes Kovacs claimed her third individual title of the weekend, winning the 200-meter breaststroke (2:29.40) and Ahmed Hussein won the 200 backstroke for the men at 2:01.78 on the final day of competition at the 2003 Texas Invitational.
