LSU assistant coach Henry “Turtle” Thomas and former major leaguer Andy Stankiewicz have been hired as assistants by Arizona State baseball coach Pat Murphy, sources confirmed Sunday.

The hirings are expected to become official later this week after background checks have been completed.

Thomas served as the LSU baseball program’s recruiting coordinator and hitting instructor for seven seasons (2000-2006). Thomas, who also tutored the Tigers’ catchers and outfielders, joined LSU in July 1999, after serving 12 seasons as an assistant coach at Miami (Fla.).

Stankiewicz, a middle infielder who appeared in 77 games with the Diamondbacks in their inaugural season, is an alumnus of Pepperdine University, where he was a standout for the Waves.

He also played for the New York Yankees (1992-1993), Houston Astros (1994-

1995), and Montreal Expos (1996-1997).
