And then there were 16. An NCAA tournament short on intrigue and upsets got a small dose of the unexpected on Sunday, as seventh-seeded UNLV, led by Arizona State transfer Kevin Kruger, sent second-seeded Wisconsin home with a 74-68 win in the second round of the Midwest Region.
Wisconsin is the only No. 1-or No. 2-seeded team to lose so far in the tournament and UNLV is the lowest seeded team to make it to the Sweet 16, which will be without a double-digit seeded team for just the second time in the past 22 tournaments.
Winthrop was the last double-digit seed left, but its shot at becoming this year’s Cinderella was halted by Oregon, which joins USC and UCLA as Pac-10 teams still alive.
