The NHRA’s National Time Trials continue today and Sunday at Firebird International Raceway near Chandler.

Fourteen-time Funny Car champion John Force, recovering from injuries suffered in a crash last season, along with five-time Top Fuel champ Tony Schumacher, will be among several drivers on hand for the testing. The season opens in two weeks in Pomona, Calif.

Testing begins at 10 a.m. today and is open to the public. Daily tickets are $28.

ASU FOOTBALL

• Ben Hilgart has been named Arizona State’s head sports performance coach, football coach Dennis Erickson announced Friday.

Hilgart has spent the past three seasons as the senior assistant sports performance coach for the Sun Devils. Hilgart replaces Joe Kenn, who accepted a similar position at the University of Louisville last month.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

• Despite sweeping several events Friday, the Arizona State swimming and diving teams fell to Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. The women lost 184-110 and the men lost 140-97.

ASU’s Micky Benedetti swept diving, winning the 1-meter (381.00) and 3-meter (425.10).

GYMNASTICS

• The No. 20 Arizona State women’s team scored a season-best 195.625 Friday at Wells Fargo Arena, but still lost to No. 3 Utah (196.7). ASU’s Nicole Harris had a season-best all-around score (39.35).

WRESTLING

• Arizona State (8-4, 2-4 Pac-10) took an early lead, but lost 27-14 Friday to Oregon State in a Pac-10 dual match held at Mesa High School.
