The Cardinals cut 16 players Saturday to reach the league-mandated 53-man limit, including veteran cornerback Robert Tate and backup tackle Ian Allen.

Allen’s release means the top backup tackle is Fred Wakefield, who converted from defensive end this season. Tate’s release is another nod to coach Dennis Green’s commitment to a younger cornerbacks corps; Raymond Walls, in his fifth season, is the nickel back. Tate was in his eighth season.

Other cuts included running back Damien Anderson, making James Jackson the No. 3 back; and wide receiver Dan Sheldon, meaning J.J. Moses is the return man for kickoffs and punts.

Also being released were defensive tackle Tim Bulman, guard Rolando Cantu, kicker Matt Fordyce, tight end Aaron Golliday, safety Jermaine Hardy, wideout Carlyle Holiday, linebacker Isaac Keys, defensive end Tyler King, wide receiver Reggie Newhouse, cornerback Lamont Reid, safety Ernest Shazor and linebacker Lester Towns.

The team also came to an injury settlement with tight end Bobby Blizzard, and he was released.
