SURPRISE - After recording a season-low six hits in Tuesday night’s 6-2 loss, the No. 4 Arizona State Sun Devils bounced back on Wednesday, pounding out a season-high 8 hits in a 12-1 victory over Kansas State at Surprise Stadium. ASU improved to 12-2 with the win.

Josh Spence went four innings in relief of starter Matt Newman. Newman went three innings, allowing only four hits and one unearned run. Jordan Swagerty, who entered the game in the eighth with the tying run on deck, earned his third save of the year after retiring all four batters he faced.

Carlos Ramirez got things started for the Devils in the first, blasting his seventh homer of the year to left, a three-run shot that put ASU up 3-0. Kansas State answered in the top of the second, bringing the score to 3-1.

The Sun Devils added two runs in the bottom of the seventh, when Riccio Torrez smashed a triple that scored Newman and Mike Leake to put ASU up 5-1.

Arizona State scored seven runs in the eighth inning to put the game away.

Arizona State will take on the Kansas Jayhawks at Surprise Stadium on Friday. The game is scheduled 45 minutes after the end of the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals Spring Training game.
