ASU softball hosts super regional this week

The Arizona State softball team will play North Dakota State at 4 p.m. Friday at Farrington Stadium in its first game of the Tempe NCAA super regional. The second game will be played at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, immediately followed by the third and final game, if necessary.

The Arizona State softball team will play North Dakota State at 4 p.m. Friday at Farrington Stadium in its first game of the Tempe NCAA super regional. The second game will be played at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, immediately followed by the third and final game, if necessary.

It is a best-of-three format. The winner moves on to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City. The games will be televised by ESPNU.

The Sun Devils are the defending national champions and beat Louisiana State twice on Sunday to advance to the super regionals.

North Dakota State, the No. 4 seed in the Norman, Okla., regional, beat Oklahoma and Tulsa to advance.

The Bison are in their first Division I NCAA tournament. They made seven straight Division II tournaments from 1998-2004 and won the national title in 2000.

Pitcher Andi Padilla gave up just three runs and had an ERA of 0.84 in the three contests last week. North Dakota State won its second game of the regional against Tulsa 3-2 on a two-out, two-run double by Melissa Chmielewski in the seventh inning.

North Dakota State played three games against Pac-10 opponents this year, losing all three to Arizona by a combined score of 31-2.

Arizona State lost to Oklahoma 8-6 earlier this year. North Dakota State beat the Sooners 1-0.
