Randy Johnson will earn $26 million on the new two-year contract he signed after consenting to a trade to rejoin the Diamondbacks, a move that could be finalized after a physical exam today.

“We have come to an agreement in principle with Randy Johnson pending both us and the Yankees reviewing additional medical information,” D-Backs general manager Josh Byrnes said in a prepared statement Sunday.

Johnson, 43, will get a $12 million signing bonus to be spread out over the next four years and will make salaries of $4 million in 2007 and $10 million in 2008, a source with knowledge of the discussions said Sunday.

The Yankees agreed to pay $2 million of Johnson’s salary this season as part of the deal in which they will acquire Luis Vizcaino and minor leaguers Alberto Gonzalez, Steven Jackson and Ross Ohlendorf.

The bonus will be distributed at $3.5 million this season, $500,000 in 2008 and $4 million in 2009 and 2010.

Johnson is scheduled to take a physical examination today, and he could be introduced at a press conference Tuesday.

So the D-Backs will be responsible for $24 million of the new money, in addition to the about $40 million Johnson is owed in deferred payments through 2012.

Johnson underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back in October, and that appears to be the only impediment. The D-Backs will also make certain his left arm shows no signs of major wear and tear.
