It was a fine night for Chandler High products and East Valley pitchers in general Friday night at the 5A all-star baseball game.
Hennessey collected a pair of hits and two RBIs and added two scoreless innings on the mound in helping the South upend the North, 8-1, in the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association contest at Surprise Stadium.
Hennessey, selected the game’s most valuable player, started the contest as the South’s designated hitter, pitched in the middle of the game and played first base in the final two innings.
Hennessey singled in the first run in the South’s five-run first inning off North starter Ian Campbell (Glendale Mountain Ridge). He added an RBI double to cap a two-run second as the South gave its four pitchers plenty of offense to work with out of the gate.
A 7-0 lead after two innings was ample for Gilbert’s Devin Fuller, Chandler Hamilton’s Justin Lindsey, Hennessey and Mesa Mountain View’s Aaron Rhodes to subdue the North.
The quartet of right-handers combined on a four-hitter and struck out 11.
Fuller got credit for the win, pitching the first two innings. He fanned four.
Hennessey and Rhodes each struck out three.
Hennessey’s Chandler High teammate Landis Ware was 2-for-3 and scored twice.
Tempe Corona del Sol’s Andrew Pollak, Casa Grande’s Kevin Odom and Hamilton’s Andy Workman also drove in runs for the South. Pollak was 2-for-2.
Top players for the North were Phoenix Brophy’s Josh Garcia, who collected two of his team’s four hits.
Scottsdale Desert Mountain’s Jason Butler and Scottsdale Horizon’s Derek Smigiel had one hit each to round out the North’s offense.
