East Valley briefs: Freshman Hein leads ASU tennis

Freshman Micaela Hein had wins in both singles and doubles as the No. 19 Arizona State women’s tennis team (3-0) topped No. 24 Texas 4-3 Saturday at Whiteman Tennis Center.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

• Eastern Arizona’s Misty Solomon scored 18 points to lead the Gila Monsters to a 83-72 victory at home against Chandler-Gilbert Community College in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference game. Shaya Harrison scored a game-high 21, and Brittania Simmons had 13 points to go with 18 rebounds for the Coyotes (12-4, 7-4).

WATER POLO

• On the strength of a three-goal performance from Addison McGrath, No. 11 Arizona State defeated No. 18 Michigan 7-5 at the Michigan Invitational. The Sun Devils (1-1) lost earlier in the day to No. 1 UCLA.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

• Despite victories from C.J. Nuess (men’s 1,000-meter freestyle, 500 free, 400 IM) and the Arizona State women’s relay teams (200 medley, 200 free) the men’s and women’s teams fell to California at Berkeley, Calif.

MINOR LEAGUE HOCKEY

• The Bakersfield Condors (12-20-7) beat the Phoenix RoadRunners (14-21-6) 4-2 in ECHL action Friday at Bakersfield, Calif.
