MISSOULA, Mont. - Josh Swogger passed for 138 yards and a touchdown and Brady Green rushed for 70 yards and another score and Montana held off a late rally to beat Northern Arizona 24-21 and remain unbeaten in Big Sky Conference play.
Montana (5-1, 4-0 Big Sky), ranked third in NCAA Division I-AA, took a 24-10 lead on a 4-yard TD run by Reggie Bradshaw with two minutes left in the third quarter.
Northern Arizona (2-4, 1-2) answered with two quick scores.
After a 46-yard field goal by Robbie Dehaze with 10:54 remaining, Quinton Jackson fumbled the kickoff and NAU recovered on the Griz 27. Three plays later, Alex Henderson scored on a 9-yard run and the Lumberjacks added a two-point conversion pass from Jason Murrietta to Skyler Moore.
Montana was able to go to the ground game and control the clock.
Henderson rushed 21 times for 114 yards for NAU.
Swogger completed 10-of-22 passes, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to Eric Allen with 7:19 left in the first quarter. He was sacked five times.
NAU answered with a 9-yard TD pass from Murrietta to Moore with 10:58 left in the half. Murrietta was 16-of-32 passes for 93 yards — nearly 140 yards below his season average.
Dan Carpenter punted nine times for an average of 45.3 yards, pinning NAU inside the 20-yard line four times. Rhian Madrid punted six times for an average of 53.8 yards, pinning Montana inside the 20 twice. Murrietta punted twice for an average of 45.5 yards.
