RoadRunners win ECHL season opener in Salt Lake City

The Phoenix RoadRunners opened the ECHL season with a 4-2 victory over the Utah Grizzlies Friday night at Salt Lake City.

Cory Pecker scored two goals for the RoadRunners, while B.J. Gaustad and Joe Dusbabek had one apiece.

ASU VOLLEYBALL

- Despite solid performances from middle blocker Staci Smith (17 kills) and outside hitter Nicole Morton (12 kills), Arizona State dropped its seventh straight match, losing to USC, 30-28, 30-22, 31-29, Friday night in Pac-10 volleyball action at Los Angeles.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

- Cactus Shadows avenged its only loss in 4A Well Fargo No. 2 Region play, beating Phoenix Sunnyslope, 25-21, 25-16 to earn the region title. Sara Pages had eight kills, five digs and three blocks, and Rachel Oligmueller added seven kills and nine digs for the Falcons (34-5, 8-1). Sunnyslope (7-2 region) beat Cactus Shadows on Thursday to force the one-match playoff.

GOLF

- The Arizona State women’s golf team was in 11th place after the first round of the Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate at Palo Alto, Calif. Tiffany Tavee and Alissa Kuczka led the Sun Devils after carding 2-over 73s.

BASEBALL

- Cubs prospect Matt Murton hit a home run as the Mesa Solar Sox defeated the Grand Canyon Rafters 11-7 in Arizona Fall League action.

In other games, the Peoria Javelinas edged the Peoria Saguaros 8-7 and the Surprise Scorpions beat the Phoenix Desert Dogs 3-2.
