East Valley briefs: A.J.'s McCullen chooses ASU

Apache Junction defensive back Shane McCullen has verbally committed to play football at Arizona State, according to Internet recruiting services.

The 6-foot-2, 193-pound McCullen is the Sun Devils' fifth commitment in the 2009 recruiting class, the third from Arizona. He reportedly had scholarship offers from seven other schools, including California and Stanford.

McCullen told ASUDevils.com that he will play a hybrid linebacker/safety position for the Prospectors this season.

TRACK

Hannah Carson, a ninth grader at Rhodes Junior High in Mesa who competed at Dobson High School, was named the 2007-08 Gatorade Arizona Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Carson is now a finalist for the national track and field athlete of the year award.

The freshman thrower, sprinter and jumper launched the javelin 167 feet, 11 inches at the Sun Angel Classic, the best throw in the nation this spring. At the 5A Division I state meet, Carson won the shot put with a throw of 41-10 1/2 and the discus with a throw of 125-7. Carson also placed third in the 100-meter dash (12.30) and third in the long jump (18-1/2).

VOLLEYBALL

Tickets for the AVP Crocs Tour Sanderson Ford Glendale Best of the Beach Invitational at Glendale's Westgate City Center will go on sale Thursday. The tournament will be played Sept. 25-27.
