Mesa Community College's Jimmy Bevell was named the Western States Football League's player of the week after throwing for 147 yards and three touchdowns as MCC recorded its first win of the season, a 54-0 thumping of Pima Community College in the WSFL opener for both schools last week.
Bevell, a Scottsdale Arcadia graduate, had his way with the Pima defense in Saturday's home win as MCC improved to 1-2.
CGCC SOCCER ON A ROLL
Chandler-Gilbert's soccer team continues to rack up the accolades as the third player in as many weeks - Kayla Poe - has been named Arizona Community College Athletic Conference women's soccer player of the week.
The Mesa Dobson graduate scored two goals and had four assists in the Coyotes' 7-2 win over MCC, and had an assist in a 3-0 win over Cochise Community College.
"Kayla has been huge in our success this year with her leadership and ability to single-handedly take over games," CGCC coach Jonathan Berzins said.
CGCC is 9-0.
Scottsdale Community College's Dave Malloy scored three goals and had two assists in a 10-0 win over Paradise Valley, earning honors as ACCAC player of the week.
Malloy had four goals in his next game, a 6-2 win over MCC.
SCC's football team was crushed by Glendale Community College 40-13 last weekend, helping Glendale move up from 11th to ninth in the NJCAA rankings. ... Paradise Valley Community College's women's team has moved into 12th in the NJCAA Division I soccer rankings with a 8-1-1 record. ... SCC's volleyball team cracked the top 10 - at No.10 - in NJCAA Division II thanks to an 18-5 record.
