A five-year contract for new Arizona State basketball coach Herb Sendek was approved by the Arizona Board of Regents.

The regents, meeting Thursday in Flagstaff, OK’d a deal of $900,000 a year, plus incentives that could take Sendek to $1 million or more.

The coach can get an annual salary increase and bonuses based on whether his team advances to the NCAA tournament and how far the Sun Devils go.

For example, if ASU qualifies for next year’s tournament and plays in two games, Sendek’s salary would jump by 4 percent, or $36,000, on July 1, 2007.

He also would get a bonus payment of 8 percent of his salary, or $72,000.

That would earn him an extra $108,000 and push his compensation past $1 million.

Sendek also can earn up to 10 percent of his salary, or $90,000, annually in bonuses based on his players’ academic performances.

The regents also approved a two-year contract extension for Arizona football coach Mike Stoops. The extension takes Stoops through the 2010 season and will pay him a base salary of $650,000 with incentives up to $1.2 million per season — the same pay he receives now.

The regents also were expected to discuss a five-year contract extension for ASU baseball coach Pat Murphy. But any such extension would have taken place in a closed session.
