Eric Sogard opened the scoring with a home run in the first inning. He closed it with a two-run home run in the eighth as he led Arizona State to a 7-6 baseball victory over Long Beach State Friday night at Packard Stadium.

In the opener of a three-game series, Sogard had four hits and drove in four runs as ASU rebounded from back-to-back losses last weekend at Auburn.

The Sun Devils came into the game with a mark of 1-3 in one-run games this season. Their only win was a 5-4 victory over Texas A&M in the fourth game of the season.

Sogard’s game-winning hit, a long home run over the right-field fence, came with two outs and Andrew Romine on second base. Romine, who had three hits and two RBIs, had doubled with one out as he became the first player all season to get an extra-base hit off Long Beach State pitcher Andrew Leibel.

Sogard obviously was the second.

Freshman Mike Leake (4-1) worked 4 1/3 innings of relief to get the victory, his fourth of the season, which ties starter Josh Satow for the team lead. Leake, who struck out five Long Beach State batters, replaced Satow in the fifth inning.

ASU (13-5) fell behind, 6-5, in the seventh inning when Robert Perry and Brandon Godfrey had RBI singles for Long Beach State (8-5).

Long Beach State scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning and did it with just two base hits.

In the inning, Godfrey scored after reaching base via a throwing error by Satow. Kyle Morgan scored after being walked and Danny Espinoza scored on a squeeze bunt play after being hit by a pitch.

Trailing 4-1, ASU rallied in the bottom of the fourth with four runs of its own.

Kiel Roling and Matt Spencer scored on a single by Romine.

Brett Wallace doubled home another run and Sogard singled to score Wallace with the fourth run.

The two teams meet again at 1 p.m. today, then close out the series 1 p.m. on Sunday.
