Arizona State’s 58-53 exhibition win over the University of Victoria Vikes won’t count in the record books, but it was significant for coach Herb Sendek.

It was his first game as ASU’s coach but, more importantly, it gave his young team a chance to get some much-needed work before the season begins Monday against Northern Arizona.

“These kinds of experiences are invaluable for our team,” Sendek said. “As many different things as we can be exposed to, the better.”

The Sun Devils’ leading scorer was freshman guard Christian Polk, who had 15 points on 4-of-13 shooting. Sophomore center Jeff Pendergraph had 12 points and seven rebounds after finishing the first half scoreless.

Sendek said he wasn’t pleased that Pendergraph didn’t get more scoring chances in the first half.
