East Valley briefs: ASU’s McGrath nets water polo goal mark

Addison McGrath tallied four goals to become the water polo program’s all-time goal scorer with 137, and Caylinn Wallace stopped nine shots Saturday as No. 10 Arizona State (11-7, 1-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) picked up its first conference win of the year with a 7-5 victory over No. 8 San Jose State in San Jose, Calif.

WRESTLING

• Gilbert’s Jed Jobe, a 31-year-old heavyweight at Grand Canyon University, qualified for the NCAA Division II championships, winning four straight matches at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships Saturday in Las Vegas, N.M. He will compete in the NCAA meet in two weeks.

SOFTBALL

• A solid first game and an extra-inning win helped No. 2 Arizona State (20-1) remain undefeated through the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational at Tempe, as the Sun Devils topped BYU 8-2 and Arkansas 6-5 in eight innings.

BASEBALL

• The Arizona (4-1) offense erupted for 15 runs on a season-high 16 hits in a 15-7 win over visiting Sacramento State at Jerry Kindall Field.
