Several East Valley high school baseball players were taken during Friday’s second day of the major league draft.
The highest pick was Matt Hall, a former Scottsdale Horizon graduate who spent time at Arizona State before transferring to Auburn. The second baseman was taken in the 10th round by Tampa Bay.
Former Scottsdale Chaparral infielder Austin Yount – the nephew of former All-Star Robin Yount – was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 12th round. Michael Brenly, son of Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly, was taken by the Chicago Cubs in the 36th round.
This spring’s Tribune player of the year, Danny Coulombe (Chaparral), was also taken by the Dodgers in the 17th round.
Shortstop Riccio Torrez (Phoenix Brophy) was selected by the Diamondbacks in the 32nd round, but will likely honor his scholarship offer to ASU to play with his older brother, Raoul.
