After sifting through 60 candidates, Gilbert Mesquite High School has hired Mike Reardon to become its next football coach.
Reardon leaves Scottsdale Saguaro High, where he led the Sabercats to a 41-21 win over Tucson Sabino in December for the school's first state title since 1995.
"I think we're fortunate," Mesquite athletic director Anthony Scanio said. "I'm elated. I didn't think it would happen."
Reardon has experience in the Fiesta Region. He coached at Gilbert Highland High from 1998-2001 before taking the Saguaro job.
Mesquite has reached the playoffs just one time in the past nine years, but with Reardon at the helm, Scanio thinks those fortunes will change.
"I suspect with Coach Reardon, we'll be in the playoffs shortly," Scanio said.
