Dane Guthrie, one of the nation’s most highly regarded tight ends out of high school, will transfer to Arizona State.

Guthrie, a 6-foot-3, 257-pounder, can play for the Sun Devils in 2006 and will have three years of eligibility left. He was expected to start as a true freshman at the University of Florida last year but was sidelined after an early season ankle injury and was redshirted.

This past spring, Guthrie decided he would not be suited for new Gators coach Urban Meyer’s spread offense.

Guthrie opted for ASU after considering North Carolina State and Boston College. His brother, Sean, was a defensive end at BC from 1998-2001 who has played in NFL Europe and recently signed with the Indianapolis Colts.

Guthrie’s arrival deepens the Sun Devils at tight end. Starter Zach Miller (56 receptions for 552 yards and six touchdowns), was the Pac-10’s freshman of the year in 2004.

Guthrie is the fourth Division I player — and the second from Florida, following defensive lineman Tranell Morant — to transfer to ASU for the 2006 season. The other transfers are former Brigham Young defensive lineman Michael Marquardt, and ex-Indiana linebacker Paul Szczesny.
