East Valley briefs: Local swimmers win finals

Whitney Lopus of Sun Devil Aquatics won one of three finals of the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:00.52 at the U.S. national swimming championships Thursday in Indianapolis.

Kohe Kawamoto of Brophy East Swimming finished fourth in the 100 butterfly in 54.05 in one of the other finals. Also, Ashley Evans of Brophy East Swimming placed sixth in a 400 butterfly final with a time of 4:16.44. All three swimmers’ times were good enough to qualify them for the Olympic Trials.


• Arizona State golfers Azahara Munoz and Jennifer Osborn have both earned exemptions to play in the 2007 U.S. Women’s Amateur, which starts Monday at the Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.


• The Phoenix RoadRunners signed rookie forward Chris Stevens to a contract for the 2007-08 ECHL season.
