Senior Bill Rhinehart made his final regularseason game at Jerry Kindall Field a memorable one by hitting for the cycle in a series-sweeping 17-8 Arizona win over Washington (27-26, 9-12 Pac-10) on Sunday at Tucson.
The victory kept Arizona’s chances of sharing the Pac-10 title alive as the Wildcats (39-13, 14-7) are three games behind conference-leading Arizona State with a three-game series against the Sun Devils this week in Tempe to close out the regular season.
TRACK AND FIELD
• Phoenix Desert Vista freshman Shaylah Simpson set a state freshman pole vault mark Saturday at the Meet of Champions at Glendale Sandra Day O’Connor High. Simpson and Mesa Mountain View’s Cara Carpenter both cleared 12 feet, with Carpenter winning on fewer misses.
Simpson’s mark is also the top mark by a freshman in the nation this season.
Other outstanding efforts at the meet included Tempe Corona del Sol’s Phil Feinberg and Avondale Agua Fria’s Jonsy Simmons each clearing 7-0 in the high jump, with Feinberg winning.
• Jeremy Defalco of Tucson had a hole-inone en route to a strong final-day score of 6-under-par 66, besting the field by six strokes, to win the Arizona Mid-Amateur Championship played at Tonto Verde on the Ranch Course at Rio Verde.
Picking up his first Arizona Golf Association major championship, Defalco was the only competitor in the field to post all three rounds under par, carding a 12-under 204.
