Herb Sendek is trying to woo his first McDonald’s All-American to the Arizona State men’s basketball program.

Center Eric Boateng, who announced recently he would transfer from Duke following his freshman season, was in Tempe on Friday and his decision could come as soon as this weekend, a source familiar with the situation confirmed.

Sendek, ASU’s new coach, recruited Boateng while Sendek was the coach at North Carolina State.

Boateng was a McDonald’s All-American for St. Andrew’s School in Delaware during the 2004-2005 season. The 6-foot-11, 255-pound native of England saw limited action in 20 games last year for the Blue Devils, averaging 0.7 points and 0.6 rebounds in 2.5 minutes per game.

Boateng’s decision came as a surprise in Durham, N.C., because there will be playing time available next season with the departure of All-American Shelden Williams. Boateng likely would have competed against incoming freshman Brian Zoubek for the starting spot in the post.

If Boateng does choose ASU, he would become just the third McDonald’s All-American in the school’s history, joining Byron Scott and Chris Sandle, who transferred to UTEP after just one season.

BONUS SHOT: Russell Westbrook, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Leuzinger High School (Lawndale, Calif.) who visited ASU last week, signed a letter-of-Intent to play for UCLA on Friday.
