Arizona State junior starting pitcher Erik Averill tossed five scoreless innings to record his fourth straight victory and five players recorded multi-hit games to lead the Sun Devils to a 13-1 victory over Wright State in nonconference baseball action Friday night at Packard Stadium.
The Sun Devils recorded their third straight win and have now won 13 of their past 17 games to improve to 19-13 overall. Wright State lost for only the third time in the last 10 games to fall to 10-11 on the season.
Averill (6-2) scattered five singles, struck out five and did not walk a batter. Senior right-hander Ty Marotz gave up one unearned run in two innings and freshman lefty Josh Satow scattered two hits in two scoreless frames.
Wright State starting pitcher Kyle Kearcher (2-1) was roughed up for 10 hits and nine runs (eight earned) in 3 1 /3 innings for the loss.
The Sun Devils outhit the Raiders 16-11 with all 19 active position players seeing action. Rocky Laguna went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and two RBIs to lead the balanced offensive attack. First baseman Zechry Zinicola (2-for-2, two RBIs), left fielder Colin Curtis (2-for-4, two RBIs), designated hitter Joey Hooft (2-for-3, triple, two RBIs) and center fielder J.J. Sferra (2-for-2) also added multi-hit games.
Second baseman Seth Dhaenens hit a two-run home run as part of a four-run second inning for his second homer of the season.
The three-game series continues at 6:30 p.m. today at Packard Stadium. The first 500 fans through the gates will receive the first 10 cards of the 2005 ASU baseball card set.
