ASU wrestlers advance
Six Arizona State wrestlers advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships on Thursday at Kansas City, Mo.
ASU winners were seventh-seeded Dana Holland at 141 pounds, over Ohio State's Jeff Ratliff, 5-3; top-seeded Eric Larkin (149 pounds) pinned Wisconsin's Ed Gutnik at 0:49; unseeded Nick Frost (165) beat 11th-seeded Jacob Klein of Nebraska, 5-4; 10th-seeded Curtis Owen (174) beat Travis Pascoe of Nebraska 6-4 in OT; unseeded Ryan Bader (197) beat Adam Schaaf of Millersville 6-4 in OT; and fourth-seeded Kellan Fluckiger (285) beat Mike Carroll of Drexel 8-1.
Two Sun Devils lost, 12th-seeded Mike Simpson (133), 8-5 to unseeded Jason Cucolo of Sacred Heart, and unseeded Rocky Smart (157) to fifth-seeded Gary Maynard of Michigan State by technical fall, 17-1 (4:57).
Oklahoma State leads the team event with 19.5 points, while ASU is in a tie for 13th place with 10 points.
Second-round action was late Thursday.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Arizona State women scored 36 points and is in 11th place after the first day of the NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships at Auburn, Ala.
Auburn is in first place, followed by Georgia, Texas and SMU. Arizona is 14th.
Claire Hedenskog shattered her previous ASU record in the 50 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay also set a school mark during the initial two sessions.
Thirteenth-ranked Arizona State split an exhibition doubleheader against the Canadian National Team at Farrington Stadium, winning 9-1 in a run-ruled five inning first game and falling, 4-1, in the second.
Noah Scott had a pinch-hit, two-run double to lead visiting Scottsdale over South Mountain, 10-8, in 11 innings in junior college baseball. Jake Hanen added a pair of hits and three RBIs for the Artichokes, who allowed just two runs after the third inning.
