Brianna Brown scored 13 points as Hamilton beat Venice (Los Angeles, Calif.) High 49-45 Monday in the first girls basketball game for both teams in the Gray Division of the Nike Tournament of Champions played at Santan Junior High in Chandler.

Connie Frasier added nine points and sophomore Pau Resor scored just three points but pulled down 20 rebounds for the Huskies (9-3).


Sam Russell had 20 points and 10 rebounds, but it was not enough as Chaparral fell to Stockdale High (Calif.) 80-65 in the first game of the Green Division of the Nike Tournament of Champions at Willis Junior High in Chandler.…

Kayla Pedersen had 24 points and 19 rebounds as Red Mountain handed Providence Day (N.C.) its first loss of the season, 60-49, in Black Division play of the Nike Tournament of Champions at Hamilton High School. Bonnie Barbee added 15 points, and Amanda Bartlett had 12 for the undefeated (7-0) Mountain Lions, who will next play Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) at 1 p.m. today.…

Katrina Graham scored 33 points to lead Desert Mountain past visiting Yuma Cibola, 58-49. Graham also had nine rebounds for the Wolves (9-4).


Jared Dubina scored three goals as host Scottsdale Christian easily beat Westwind Prep 10-1 in a 2A Metro Region game. Taylor Payton and Austin Plott added two goals each for the Eagles (1-4-1, 1-3-1).…

Phil Michieli scored with four minutes left in the game to give visiting Gilbert a 1-0 victory over Hamilton. Jason Disanto assisted Michieli on the goal. Brian Davies earned his fourth shutout on the year for the Tigers (7-2).…

Othello Kossigbo and Alex McDuffie scored three goals each as host Arcadia beat Saguaro 7-2 in a 4A nonregion game.…

Fountain Hills defeated visiting Florence 14-2. Willie Rupert scored five goals for the Falcons (8-4, 2-0). Kyle Alexander, Pedro Pyles and Dobson Rauch each had two goals with Drew Dunledy, Justin Stevenson and Jeff Suagee each adding a goal.


Desert Mountain beat Phoenix Sunnyslope 6-0 in pool play of the Greenway Girls Soccer Invitational at Glendale Cactus High. All six goals for the Wolves (5-4) were scored by different individuals.…

Danielle Shorts had four goals and visiting Highland (5-3, 2-1) beat Chandler 4-1 in a 5A Fiesta Region game. Lauren Terrell scored for the Wolves (3-4,0-3).


Nathan Bohy hit a 3-point shot with 40 seconds left, which helped host Mesquite beat Marcos de Niza 57-56 in a 5A nonregion game. Bohy hit the 3 with the Wildcats (5-5) trailing by two points. Waylan Townes was fouled on the ensuing Padre possession and made one of two free throws. From there, the Wildcats were able to run the clock out.
