Suns chairman Jerry Colangelo underwent successful prostate cancer surgery in New York on Thursday, the team said.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Peter Scardino at the Memorial Sloan-Kett ering Cancer Center.

Colangelo, 65, was diagnosed with prostate cancer last month. He was resting comfortably following the operation, the Suns said in a news release.

Colangelo, inducted into the basketball Hall of Fame this year, came to Phoenix as the general manager of the expansion Suns in 1968 and later formed a group to purchase the franchise.

Earlier this year, Colangelo sold the franchise to a group headed by San Diego banker and real estate magnate Robert Sarver.

Colangelo also headed the group that brought professional baseball to Phoenix but was pushed out of that franchise’s management this year by the Diamondbacks’ new ownership group.

Colangelo will remain hospitalized for a few days, the Suns said.
