Outlook: It’s very rare for the Valley Christian football program to suffer two consecutive losing seasons. That’s what happened in 2011 and 2012, but the personnel returning this season makes it very unlikely the streak reaches a third year. The Trojans have fallen from their spot among the Division V elite in recent years but a playoff berth seems likely this season, and once they get there, the Trojans could do some damage.

Outlook: Many of the new schools in the East Valley have been competitive from Day 1 at the varsity level. Combs has not been one of those programs, but could be set for an improvement based on a new-look schedule in 2013. The Coyotes had a tough go of it last season, especially considering three of its first six foes included Division III champion Queen Creek, Division III semifinalist Williams Field and Division IV champion Seton Catholic.

Outlook: It took a couple years for Matt Lewis to put his coaching imprint on the McClintock football program. He admits he had to be tougher in his first year to get the right kids in the program and get the wrong ones out. Since then, he’s slowly lightened up, ready to now enjoy the process with the players who have gone through the transition with him. The No. 1 sign it’s working? Despite a 2-8 season in 2012, the participation numbers at the school are improving.
