Brewer, Goddard begin campaigns for governor

Our View: The 2010 campaign for Arizona governor is taking shape with the standard-bearers for both major parties -- Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican; and Attorney General Terry Goddard, a Democrat -- moving into the race. This could be one of the most important campaigns in state history as candidates will have to explain how they would approach state government’s huge budget deficits that will require significant policy changes to resolve.

Linda Turley-Hansen: Those fighting the “Travel Management Plan” implementation say more than two-thirds of America’s back country roads are registered for closure. Vacationing families will be funneled into confined camp spaces, manned by toll gates, just like in Yosemite National Park. When the campgrounds are full, the overflow will be sent on their way.

The turnaround, fueled by community demand and grass-roots support, is so remarkable that organizers have selected the people of Gilbert collectively as the parade's grand marshal when it marches down Gilbert Road one week from Friday.

Le Templar: A day after the Tribune’s parent company announced it will close the newspaper and its web sites on Dec. 31, I am surprised and heartened by the extensive range of people who have told me they are shocked by the news, saddened by the pending loss of a community voice, and praying for my colleagues and their futures.
