If the future of baseball lies within Mesa Little League, the National Pastime will remain alive and well for years to come. About 350 Mesa Little Leaguers showed up at a baseball clinic hosted by the Chicago Cubs and Mesa Little League at Hohokam Stadium on Sept. 13, 2010, as part of the Keep the Cubs campaign – Proposition 420. The issue is on the Nov. 2 general election ballot for voters to decide whether to allow the city to spend $84 on a new spring training facility to keep the largest draw in all of spring training for at least 30 more years. Under the direction of numerous coaches and Hall of Fame pitcher Fergie Jenkins, the young players who were armed with worn gloves and experience no bigger than the lump in their throat, received guidance on the fundamentals of the game – throwing, catching, fielding, running the bases and hitting the ball.
