Many Hispanic businesses in Mesa are empty, or are on the verge of closing, due to the economic downturn and the recent fallout over Arizona's immigration law, SB 1070.

Julio Cesar Chavez Campeones, the Hispanic-themed sports bar and boxing and entertainment venue at 1300 S. Country Club Drive at Southern Avenue, closed earlier this year and was replaced quickly by AZ Country USA.

Luis Mosquedo, 44, stands in front of his restaurant, Adrian’s No. 2 Mexican Restaurant at 1011 W. Main St. in west Mesa. Mosquedo, who opened the eatery in 1996, said business has been slowing down the last three years due to a bad economy. Mosquedo said that business has been down more than 50 percent in the last year alone and pending the effects of Senate Bill 1070 set to go into effect on July 29, he said he may have to close his business.
Aliberto’s Mexican Food, a small road stand and eatery at 263 W. University Ave., Mesa. Owner Tony Montero said that within the last year, business has died a good 75 to 80 percent, and he is considering closing his business, pending the fallout from SB 1070.
