Life hasn’t been kind to Loretta, a whippet/cattle dog mix. When AZ RESCUE found her, she had small scars along her legs and belly, and a bump on her left front leg from an old fracture that healed on its own because she didn’t receive medical treatment. Part of the tip of her nose is missing and her tail appears to have been broken at some point as well.

But the bumps, bruises and broken bones haven’t broken Loretta’s ability to love. An affectionate dog, Loretta loves to be held and petted, and to receive tummy scratches. Initially shy with men, Loretta warms up quickly once she feels safe. And she is learning to enjoy life too, taking long walks on a leash, playing and running with other friendly dogs, and chewing on bones and her stuffed octopus toy.

Loretta remains vigilant and startles easily, especially from sudden noises. Her physical scars, too, remain. But with reassurance, she relaxes, feels safe, and returns the love she is given.

For more information on Loretta, or other deserving animals, call Reducing Animal Euthanasia at Shelters through Commitment and Underlying Education at (480) 598-9410 or visit www.azrescue.org. The cost of adoption is $125 for cats and $150 for dogs, which includes spaying and neutering and some inoculations.
