Help kids from low-income families in the East Valley improve their reading skills by organizing a book drive for Head Start. According to the preschool program, a recent study found that the ratio of age-appropriate books per child in middle-income neighborhoods is 13 to 1, compared to one book for every 300 children in low-income neighborhoods.
The Maricopa County Head Start Zero-Five Program serves more than 1,400 young children a year, and is in need of new or gently used children’s books.
For information on how you can organize a book drive, contact Chrisanda DeBois at Head Start at (480) 464-9669, Ext. 295, or visit the Maricopa County Head Start website at http://www.hsd.maricopa.gov/headstart.
