Little things that most of us take for granted -- like being able to hop in the car and drive to an appointment - can be huge obstacles for elderly people who want to live on their own. You can help by volunteering to drive a senior in your area to his or her doctor appointment once a month during the week.

Assistance for Independent Living, 45 W. University Drive, Suite B, in Mesa, is a non-medical in-home care agency seeking volunteer drivers to help seniors in Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert and Apache Junction. This once-a-month good deed usually takes just one to two hours - but can make a big impact by allowing senior citizens to remain living independently in their homes.

This is especially a good volunteer opportunity for adults 55 and older. To volunteer, you must have a valid driver's license, pass a background check, be at least 18, attend orientation or training, and agree to help out two hours a month on an as-needed basis.

To volunteer, contact Ellen Terry at (480) 966-9704. For more information, visit www.evadultresources.org.
