Mesa United Way is looking for volunteers to provide free tax help to East Valley residents and volunteers to help with a distribution of Christmas gifts to children in foster care.
The tax help volunteers will assist low- to moderate-income families, seniors, people with disabilities and those with English as a second language prepare and file their income tax returns free of charge, said Don Jensen, the agency's program manager.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) is overseen by the Internal Revenue Service and is intended not only to ensure taxpayers file accurate returns on time, but that they receive all the tax credits they're entitled to, Jensen said.
Volunteers are asked to provide tax help three to four hours a week, from Feb. 6 through April 14. Training will be offered in January.
If you're looking for a volunteer opportunity that's more holiday-related, how about helping with Mesa United Way's Christmas program for foster care kids. The agency needs both volunteer support and gifts. For more information, call (480) 969-8601.
