The difference was we had the fairness doctrine then and there was a free press. Now, Gannett for the south and west has 80 newspapers, making millions on political ads. We see these same ads on far more than the three networks and Clear Channel has 1,500 radio stations.
Those big corporations do not even leave enough for candidates to pass out buttons or bumper stickers any more.

EV you need to stop “reporting” comments you don’t like. Your comments in at least 3 columns today follow comments that are missing. Too much coincidence to overlook. I would have liked to have read what Slabside wrote before you caused it to be deleted.

To follow up: Corporations should not be allowed to operate by a different set of rules. Just as corporations need to make a profit, American citizens need to make a decent living. Government is about the people, it has always been that way. Americans believe in consumer protection, labor rights, fair pay and opportunities for everyone. The financial meltdown was due to deregulation and reckless corporate practices. What it is going to take for the Neo-Cons to admit that their philosophy is just plain wrong and will never work. Government shouldn’t sit on the sidelines and allow corporations to rob us blind and take away our jobs. Government needs to keep corporations on a leach, especially when you consider that we live in a consumer based economy. As jobs go so does our economy, a concept that Republicans like Romney want to ignore.

Guarding against their left-leaning views, the Liberal Media are a lot like judges.
They're biased Liberal campaign views has been on displayed during the coverage of President Obama's handling of the embassy attack in Benghazi, Libya.
Obama downplayed the possibility of terrorism and initially blamed it on an anti-Muslim amateurish movie promo. President Obama was caught lying again! And in their misleading way, the Liberals are still covering up how soon the White House really knew it was an orchestrated terror-attack in Libya.
The coverage did not, and will not, question what the president and his administration knew all the time. Instead they keep focusing on how protests were in reaction to an anti-Muslim video.

Your argument is confusing. Do you deny the socialism or the capitalist system? If you are saying that the "general welfare" refers to the government taking full charge and providing welfare for everyone from cradle to grave, then you are talking about a progressive socialism. Or are you complaining that corporations run the media for a profit? All corporations need to make a profit or they go out of business. The only entity that can operate with a deficit and still stay in business is the government and the entities that it supports. There is nothing "Fair" about a "Fairness Doctrine".
