Having spent 20 years working with the black community as a counselor and therapist, I’d like to say that Linda Turley-Hansen is a sweetheart and means well. She is beautiful and intelligent, but unfortunately, lacks a spectrum of education that would facilitate her understanding of race.
I agree with everything in the article dated Sept. 18 (“Opinion: Speaking out against columnist’s ‘assumptions, presumptions and downright racist stereotypes”; Tribune). Common sense will only take us so far in terms of understanding our own early childhood operant conditioning. I learned this the hard way in my first sociology class and other subsequent classes dealing with race and culture. My professors were not always particularly kind about it either — ultimately to my benefit.
At what point will the Tribune restrict this well-intended but ignorant voice?
