In your Feb. 20 issue there was a gentleman that spoke of total freedom. I talk on this as well! “Total freedom nullifies social contract”

I agree that we give up total freedom, otherwise we could kill if we wanted, rob if we wanted and so on. However, that is why the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were created. They knew that, without those rules, the power would consume the leaders and we would get what we ran from. We are constantly perverting everything to make what the leaders want. He (the writer) says that requesting total freedom would nullify the social contract.

First off, as mentioned before, there are contracts in place that regulate their power, which is part of this contract he speaks of. Second, the government nullified the contract long ago when it dissented from by the people, for the people, and started protecting big business and corporate banks and stealing from the people that they are supposed to be a part of.

So his statement really holds no worthwhile content on that point. While I agree to part of his statement, he is off course.

    Chris,
You are almost as wrong the the "Total" freedom guy. Nothing is "totally" free, just, fair or perfect. Although you are right when saying power does corrupt.

Washington's repeal-Obama Care crowd is feeling a little lonely these days. Now Republican governors in eight states bow to political reality and agreed to accept Affordable Care Act's optional Medical expansion. A former hospital executive and Tea Party favorite, Scott was among the ACA-s fiercest opponents, at one point spending $20 million of his own money on adds denouncing President Obama's “job killing” health-care reform. But now Scott has given up the fight, claiming he could not, “in good conscience, deny uninsured access to care.” Obama Care is actually based on a Republican from the early 1990s to solve the problem of uninsured “free riders” on the system. Too bad Republicans didn't notice this until they spent the past four years “ screaming about socialism.” American exceptionalism in health care-American's standing as the sole advanced democracy without universal access to medical care-is over.

truth, it's not a matter of Republicans vs Democrats. It's those of us who value the Constitutional limits on the power of the federal government vs those who want the government to take care of everybody's problems for them.

As one of the few federal forms of government, its natural that we don't have nearly as many nation-wide programs for the citizens. The point of a federal government is that it governs the federation of the States, which, in turn, provide for the citizens.

truth... is there something wrong with your computer that makes your comments end up attached to the wrong letter? There is a discussion regarding medicare but as far as I can tell this letter relates to federal, state and personal rights and freedom including those of special interests having more clout than citizens.

The problem is that the Constitution has been changed, interpreted, examined, recast and abridged in favor of governmental power to the point where it has lost the objects it was created to preserve. Consider, the direct election of Senators. Senators were designed as a bridge between State and Federal government. Because the bridge was integral to the smooth operation of government, they were sent to Washington by the state legislature, not directly elected. With direct election we broke the continuity of the government as it was designed to operate. We created two entities, State and Federal governments, losing the continuity between them. Now instead of working together, they have become adversaries and seek power one over the other and with every step they take, they diminish personal freedom. The social contract has been modified, interpreted, re-defined to the point that it is a mishmash a step away from anarchy.
