For 26 years, My Sisters’ Place has been sheltering and assisting women and their children fleeing domestic violence.
We are one of only two confidential domestic violence shelters serving the East Valley and one of the few which places only one family per room, providing a more private and comforting environment for their safety and recovery.
On Saturday, Oct. 29, we invite families to our third annual community event, Hands of Love Family Fun Festival, to be held at Chandler Gilbert Community College from 1 to 4 p.m.
The fun includes food, activity booths, information, the Chandler Police Mobile Command Unit and Chandler fire truck to name a few.
Young children learn that hands are for love, not hurting as they participate in our informative activity booths appropriate for youth of all ages. Parents will learn how to begin a discussion with their children about healthy relationships and preventing dating violence. All will learn about the resources in the community to assist those suffering from domestic abuse.
October is nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness month. In Arizona, a domestic violence death occurs nearly every five days and there have been at least 34 domestic violence related fatalities occurring in Chandler between 1998 and June of 2011. We hope to reach out to the community and work toward the elimination of violence by actively educating families about building healthy relationships.
We invite the community to join us and bring the entire family! To assure we have enough refreshments and supplies, please RSVP by Oct. 26 at to Kim Martin at firstname.lastname@example.org or at 480.821.1024.
Chandler Gilbert Community College is located at 2626 E. Pecos Road in Chandler. Activities take place from 1 to 4 p.m. with a brief awards presentation at 1:30 p.m. emceed by ABC-15’s Susan Casper.
On behalf of these women and children, the Friends of My Sisters’ Place, and the staff, volunteers and Board of Catholic Charities, I offer heartfelt thanks for your ongoing support.
