Letter: Can’t afford to ignore horrible U.S. rankings against rest of world

The bumper sticker reads, “Obama Lied — Freedom Died.”

The owner of this vehicle lives in a fantasy world, created in his mind by three decades of Regressive smoke and mirrors.

You know, the ones who still believe 98 percent of the world’s scientists are clueless about this silly climate change thing?

The very same ones who prefer to ignore the following statistics:

The U.S. ranks 17th in education and 12th in college graduation, well behind most Asian and European nations?

We rank 48th in infant mortality?

We rank 17th in men’s life expectancy? We ranked NUMBER ONE in the 1950’s and have dropped steadily since the 1980’s?

Out of the 35 most economically advanced countries, America ranks 34th in child poverty?

The World Economic Forum ranked the U.S. 25th for infrastructure, behind every other advanced industrial nation?

But we do lead the world in incarceration rates, health care expenditures, obesity and surpass most of the world in homicides and energy use per capita?

Please explain to me how these statistics make America great? Are these the figures we’d teach our children as a source of pride and patriotism?

Isn’t it about time we face the reality that we’ve been badly deceived over the past 30 years? Wealth does not “trickle down” unless we are willing to demand changes!

Next time you hear a Regressive prattle on about FREEDOM, ask him, “What freedom? The freedom to be last in line among equals? The freedom to choose between good health and paying rent?

Regressives are dragging America back to the stone age!

Yes, Rod, we have some real problems. They were not all created by your "regressives". Depressives had their grubby little hands on it too. I am alarmed and disappointed that a country that is supposed to be so great has (still) so many social problems. LBJ was going to end poverty. It's worse than ever. 40 years ago with the Arab Oil Embargo we were going to get off of imported oil. Never happened. From Bush I to Clinton to Bush II and now Obama we were going to be educationally no. 1. Didn't happen. Climate change? It's always been changing - for millions of years. What went wrong in the country is 1) too many people got greedy, 2) too many people decided that being stupid is ok, 3) too many people want everything given to them, 4) too many politicians are willing to do that to get re-elected. There's a great book called That Use to Be Us you should read.

Republican voters made it clear that they want real conservatives, not a reprise of George W. Bush's “ big government conservatism.” We've had enough of “squishy centrists” like Romney and John McCain. Rove has succeeded in rallying a group of “battered, bruised, depressed, and demoralized conservative constituencies” against him. The GOP has, for four years, organized itself around a message to white voters that “they are coming after your money and status and privilege.” It's a message that Rove ruthlessly exploited in masterminding Bush's rise from Texas to the White House. But with the aging white electorate shrinking, “resubmit politics” is no longer a winner. Here's a tip to my friends on the Right: “Cosmetic rebranding” won't fix your problems.

The sequester emerged from the debt ceiling standoff of 2011, when Congress approved $1.2 trillion in automatic cuts over 10 years to be triggered in 2013 if Democrats and Republicans could not forge a compromise on deficit reduction. The across-the-board cuts of 7.3% to military spending and 5.1% to domestic spending were designed to be so severe that neither party would swallow them. Obama has proposed an alternate plan of $900 billion in targeted spending cuts $600 billion in new revenue from the closure of tax loopholes, but congressional Republicans say they gave Obama a tax increase in December and insist that any deficit-reduction alternative to the sequester wholly of spending cuts. It wont be just the people who loose their jobs that will be hurt, are economy is finally coming back to life. But our dysfunctional government “is now the biggest single threat to the recovery.”

“Dirty 30”: behemoths that collectively earned tens of billions in profits between 2008 and 2010 but paid no taxes during that three-year period. These companies “so deftly exploited carve outs and loopholes in the tax code that all but one of them enjoyed a negative tax rate”—that is, they received money back from the U.S. Treasury.

They’ve certainly profited from the friendly tax code. Together the 30, which include Wells Fargo, Mattel, Verizon, GE, Boeing, Duke Energy A&P, Du PONT and other well-known corporate brands, collected $10.6 billion in tax rebates during the three years Citizens for Tax Justice studied. Many of the companies on the list claim tax rebates while avoiding taxes altogether by parking profits in overseas shelters.

Truth is making some good points here. Rod is detached and lives in a self loathing progressive universe. Yes Rod, 98% of the world's scientist belive that global warming is man made. Except, that whenec=ver one comes out and says it is a bunch of hooey and wants to debate it, the other"98%" disappear into the night. Similarly, your other progressive "facts" all go to the loss of freedom and the quick sinking into loss of responsibility. People are fat becuase they don't eat right and exercise. Who else should have more responsibility than one's self in this regard. Similar with education et al. We have slowly slid to it is the Government's job to make sure X happens. The Govt will take your money, fritter it away and you will be fat and stupid. That is the loss of Freedonm and responsibility going hand and hand.

The source of our problems isn't Republicans and it isn't Democrats.

    It's Republicans and Democrats.

We allowed those two special interest groups to completely hijack our government, and now we live in a nation where our elected officials care more about making the other party look bad than they do about solving any sort of problem.

When half are pulling left and half are pulling right, how can you expect to move forward?

I agree with everything this letter says. I have found similar findings and can say with certainty that this is correct. The "Tea Party" needs to except that we don't live in the 1800's anymore. The demographics have changed, ideas have changed. This warped vision of no government or small government is a pipe dream. It doesn't matter how large the government is as long as it is efficient. If the GOP wasn't so obsessed with trying to dismantle and sabotage everything, this country would be in much better shape.

My Take, The Constitution disagrees with you. If you think the federal government should govern and care for the citizens, instead of the State and local governments, then you should be pushing to update the Constitution. Good luck with that.

What I love about ....SEQUESTER .....is that so many of the worthless, Government employees in Washington, DC, Detroit, Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City will lose their jobs. What is ironic is that these are the very ones who voted "en masse" for President Obama.......what a hoot.

One of their own ....threw them ....."UNDER THE BUS".......[wink]

Rod: The source of your statistical argument is? A revitalized republican party or a strong leader with clear goals in the Tea Party is our salvation, not more marxism.

Rod is claiming that the regressives are pulling us back into the stone age. Seems to me more like the progressives are pulling us over the cliff.

Rod Livdahl speaks the truth. Unfortunately we live in a country where we are free to elect regressives who would rather we live in a dark and fearsome age.

    Rod,
Didn't Obama say the world is ending this March 1st. Has the liberal/progressive/socialist state collapsed already? LOL

"we are free to elect regressives who would rather we live in a dark and fearsome age." Right, I suppose that the last 5 years has been the days of wine and roses then? Oh I know, President Obama would have fixed everything by now if it weren't for the nettlesome GOP. Yes yes, all we need to do is look to the rousing success of the USSR in how progressivism is the answer to all our sorrows. It worked out great- right?

What's wrong with our country? Some on the left will use the excuse that is because the right is not progressive like they are. Is saying the life of a killer is worth saving, yet the life of the innocent unborn is not, their idea of progress? Is punishing success and rewarding laziness? What's wrong with our country is that our Constitution was written for a citizenry that had morals. Interestingly it's the Liberals that say the Constitution needs to be be changed because it's regressive! Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.

The difference is that liberals believe that whatever your circumstance is not your fault or responsibility. Where conservatives belive it is fully your responsibility. Most policies on both sides reflect that difference.

There was a very interesting article the other day about brain scans detecting a person's political affiliation.

When Democrats were making choices the area of their brain that deals with empathy lit up in the brain scans.

When Republicans were making the same decisions, their brains lit up in the areas that deal with fear!!

The article claimed the brain scans could detect which party people followed 82% of the time.

So now everyone can understand what motivates Republicans --- FEAR.

I think the world just stopped turning! I have to agree with Willie's analogy of the study! I feel most Liberals do make decisions based on empathy or how they feel, and Republican's do make decisions based on their senses or a fear. I know every time the Democrat's makes a decision they FEEL is good for them, I FEAR how much damage or the cost will be to us!
Seriously, I have believed for years that this is true. If you stop and think, it does make sense. Liberals base their choices on how they feel, and Conservatives on what they sense. Take the gun control argument, Liberals will argue they feel we have to take away guns for the children's safety. A Conservative will sense there will be hard without guns to protect their children from criminals. Remember, there is a way to disconnect the senses or fear part of the brain and turn a Conservative into a Liberal, it's called a lobotomy! [wink]

Willie - Way to distort the study. (of only 82 people) It wasn't all decisions. It was decisions which involved RISK. The fight or flight part of the brain (not just fear, as you tried to claim) is meant to deal exactly with that. Also, there was no real difference in the risk taken between parties.
