The Gun Lobby points out, cars kill more. To save lives and property, Vehicles are registered. Insurance is required. Inspections and limit auto of use and abuse for public safety.

Portions of the U S Constitution are ignored or nullified because of a word long ago inappropriate, to justify possible action of Anarchy by the duly elected Government.

Edward Sched, a 1978 convicted murder may not be executed next month.

Children of Newtown were afforded no right to appeal.

The Gun lobby has voided the Promise of the U S Constitutional as to their right of life liberty and pursuit of happiness. All the verbiage that follows the Preamble is to accomplish those goals. Are we the model of civilized government we were for a century. If you forgot. Preamble of the Constitution of the United States of America

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

    Driving is a common denominator in vehicular manslaughter!
    Registering vehicles and requiring insurance does not prevent drunks, inexperienced illegals or teenagers from killing people with cars (citing only a few of the high-potential groups, not picking on you).

    Let's severely restrict the use of cars!

    Face it! you cannot make the world (nor your family) completely safe from all threat. Death and destruction are not totally avoidable.

    What you can do is prepare, prevent and pray.

    And the insurance industry put the nail in the coffin, by restricting the length of treatment to around 30 days, for strictly financial reasons, ensuring that mental health remain in the psuedo-scientific arena, along with palm reading and astrology. The drug companies have a windfall, self-help books and religious cults abound, and the casualties increase, in the meantime.

    Sock - The point is, no one can answer that. The ACLU pushed a ruling that essentially forced all the mentally-ill who didn't want treatment onto the streets.

    So DonMey, what should the criteria for holding the “mentally ill?” What test gives us a magic formula? Chemical, biological, social, political? Who does the picking, the NRA or the ACLU? The Tea Party or Al Gore? Do we use Hitler’s criterion, Lenin’s or some Orwellian profile? What would you “hold” anyone for if they are not a threat to others? If the cause is genetic do we send the whole family to the “rehabilitation” farm? Will you agree if you become the picked instead of the picker?

    We are talking about shootings here, not Kool-Aid parties or ax murderers. It’s obvious that the tool of choice is guns, probably because of lethality, efficiency and availability. Restricting access through some type of control and limiting type and clip size may reduce efficiency. This could be done without infringing on anyone’s rights to possess arms.

    As for history, start with the legend of Cain and Abel. Guns weren’t available so Cain had to use a jawbone. Later, Samson was able to destroy an entire army with a jawbone so it was one of the preferred weapons of biblical myth. Would Cain or Samson have chosen an AR-15 if available?

    Sock - You should have bolded "if they pose a threat to others". Because the ACLU forced that to be the only criteria for holding the mentally ill, and it is pretty much impossible to prove/disprove. If we actually knew if someone was dangerous beforehand, preventing crime would be easy. But people are unpredictable, and then throw in mental illness too?

    "Guns are the common denominator in all shootings"....Well...DUH! Did you know knives are the common denominator in all knifings? And you can even go further back in history than your example!

    Chat… there is a close parallel between the NRA’s defense of the 2nd amendment and the ACLU’s defense of the 1st amendment. I don’t think you can cite any case where the UCLA has advocated that the mentally ill should be free to act as they please or to be free if they pose a threat to others. I think you made that up. Are you blaming the crazed gunman for the three shootings of policemen here in the East Valley in the last couple of weeks? Guns are the common denominator in all the shootings as far back in U. S. history as you want to go. It has now become an epidemic that you will have a hard time blaming on the ACLU. That’s just a silly smoke screen trying to hide the obvious.

    Easy to blame something other than the crazed gunman for the horror at Newtown. The fault lies with the madman not the gun lobby, NRA or the Constitution. We are now reaping the rewards of the ACLU's 40 years of fighting for the rights of the mentality ill to be free and act as they please.

    JMJ, there are not many times when Leon is correct but this is one of those rare times.

    Obama has indeed instructed ICE to ignore the law and not deport people who the law clearly states should be deported.

    In my not so humble opinion, that is grounds for impeachment.

    But, it will never happen because MONEY wants ILLEGAL labor and MONEY will GET illegal labor.

    We have the best Congress money can buy.
