I am a college senior at the top of my class preparing to start a career in Elementary & Special Education and am extremely disappointed in Gilbert’s disinterest in improving the quality of its school system. Teacher pay in the Gilbert Public Schools has been frozen for years and stripping funding from them at this juncture will only ensure that this trend continues!
I have heard the argument that Gilbert Public Schools are spending the money they do have poorly and that much of its funding is being swallowed by excessive administrative costs. However, lowering our property taxes to teach them a lesson will only take more money away from the classroom. Defunding the district with a vote while elected officials bury it in bureaucratic requirements is simply irresponsible. School reform is undoubtedly needed, but the type of reorganization our schools need can not be accomplished on a shoestring budget.
The greatest danger of all is that this lack of support for the local schools by the community will chase away prospective teachers. I can only speak for myself, but as an up-and-coming teacher that lives in Gilbert, I am certainly going to be looking for my first teaching job in Mesa or Chandler.
