I am a retired Valley Metro bus driver from the East Valley asking for your support for some of the finest and most dedicated Arizona workers that this state has.
The public first of all needs to know that the ATU members signed a new labor contract in February, after working over a year without one, knowing full well that Veolia would be losing its management contract to First Transit, but we were reassured that the contract would be honored.
Naively, we believed them.
The Mesa drivers did not participate in the strike last year. This is what happens when local government and RPTA, privatizes public transportation (all Valley Metro bus drivers are private employees).
RPTA approved a management contract that was so ridiculously underbid to another foreign national company that, will suck millions of local and federal taxpayer dollars to Britain, instead of using those dollars locally to improve and enhance public transportation here in Maricopa County, far more than the ATU contract calls for.
Ironically, if public transportation were not privatized by state law the drivers would not have been allowed to strike.
It is time that all Arizona working people stood by their neighbors and friends against these anti-worker politicians and foreign companies who have no interest in the working people of their state.
I can guarantee you the Arizona employees of First Transit need and want to return to work as soon as possible, but this foreign company only cares about one thing: greed.
