New Mesa Mayor Alex Finter has clearly indicated his desire to shut down Falcon Field and throw thousands of people out of work with his creation of a special commission to oversee Falcon Field. Of the six people appointed to the commission one is the leader of the neighborhood effort to close Falcon, two are developers, one finances developers, and four of the six are not even pilots and have no association with general aviation at all. Only one pilot from Falcon Field was appointed to this new commission.

Most of the appointees have backed former Mayor Scott Smith for his gubernatorial run. Apparently, their reward was to be able to oversee the closure of Falcon Field in a Putin-like land grab that will line the pockets of these wealthy Smith supporters.

It is a sad day for all of Mesa when these type of shenanigans happen. It will be even sadder when Falcon Field, in existence since 1941 and a vibrant contributor to Mesa’s overall economy, is gone in a few years.
