This week, I had the opportunity to visit a food bank and a soup kitchen. Both experiences were enlightening, and vastly different from what I was expecting. Did you know that most people getting extra help from these organizations not only have jobs, but also receive SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits? I certainly didn’t.

The statistics on hunger in the country are very surprising. In Arizona, for instance, 1 in 5 adults, and 1 in 4 children, are struggling with hunger. That’s between 20 percent and 25 percent of the population!

Food is becoming more and more expensive, and for families with kids, it is increasingly difficult to combine childcare costs and low salaries with proper nutrition. This is why it is so important to realize there is a problem, and why food banks and soup kitchens are such fantastic and important organizations!
